Legal Counsel

We’re looking for an excellent lawyer with good commercial and/ or IP experience) who has a particular interest in sports rights issues and data. We provide more than 500 different sports products to cover editorial, data, images and video as well as providing specialist content to the gaming industry and streaming services to major teams across a number of sports.

Join us as an In-house Legal Counsel and you will have a fantastic opportunity to develop your career within a diverse organisation made up of specialist media companies spanning news & information, data, technology, marketing and communications.

You will be responsible for providing high quality, concise and commercial legal advice on a wide range of issues including social media, data and sports rights, IP, advertising and competition law with a focus on our sports businesses. While this is a legal role, there are great opportunities for the right person to help shape the commercial future of our fast-growing sports and streaming businesses.

We can be flexible on number of years PQE but, as a guide, we’d expect this to be around two to four years. You’ll report directly to the Group General Counsel and work in a dedicated team which includes another Legal Counsel, a Senior Legal Counsel and a dedicated Administrator.

We’re happy to consider someone either from a private practice or an in-house background provided you have had some commercial experience and will offer measured career development with a view to developing you into the Senior Counsel role.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Drafting and negotiating content licences and other agreements for the Group’s newspaper, online, broadcast, mobile and other customers
  • Negotiating partnership arrangements and service provider contracts for the acquisition of content and services including fast paced content acquisition for our news services
  • Managing commercial, IP and libel disputes/litigation—and instructing external law firms
  • Supporting or (dependant on your experience) managing corporate projects including acquisitions, joint ventures and company secretarial processes
